Aftercare

Protect the work.

A tattoo is a wound. How you treat it in the first two weeks determines how it heals. Follow these instructions carefully.

At the end of your session I apply Second Skin, a protective adhesive dressing. Wear it for 4 days.

Path A

If the Second Skin stays on for the full 4 days

When you remove it, you can skip the ointment stage and go straight to Lubriderm. Use the cream for 2 weeks. Wash the tattoo once each morning in the shower. For the rest of the day, wash your hands with soap and water, dry them with paper towel, and apply a very thin layer of cream.

Path B

If the Second Skin comes off before 4 days

Apply antibiotic ointment every 4 hours for 2 days. Each time, wash the tattoo with soap and water, dry it with paper towel (not a regular towel), then work a thin layer of ointment into the skin until it is spread thoroughly. After those 2 days, move on to Lubriderm for 2 weeks, following the same morning routine above.

I also walk every client through this in detail in person, so you will never be left guessing.

What to avoid — always

Swimming

Pools, lakes, and hot tubs introduce bacteria and soften healing skin.

Picking or scratching

Removes ink and creates scarring. Tap instead of scratch when itchy.

Direct sun

UV breaks down ink pigments faster than anything else. Cover or use SPF.

Tight clothing

Friction over a healing tattoo damages the repair process.

Excessive moisture

Over-moisturising can cause "ink fallout" — thin coats only.

Shaving over it

Wait until fully healed before running a razor over the area.

Recommended products

Second Skin and Lubriderm are the two products you need most. Any fragrance-free, unscented moisturiser works for the cream stage — Aquaphor and Hustle Butter are common alternatives. Antibiotic ointment is only needed if the Second Skin comes off early.

Something look wrong?

Signs of infection include: fever, excessive swelling, pus, red streaking, or skin that feels hot to the touch 72+ hours after your session. If you notice any of these, seek medical attention immediately.
